Where can I apply for a South African ID?

Online Application: You can apply for your South African ID using the online service at https://ehome.dha.gov.za/ehomeaffairsv3. This service allows you to complete the application process online.

  • Appointment Booking: Some Home Affairs offices offer an online Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS) for booking appointments. You can check the list of offices providing this service at http://www.dha.gov.za/index.php/notices/1557-branch-appointment-booking-system-babs-available-offices. To book an appointment, visit https://services.dha.gov.za/#/authenticate/identity.
  • Booking System Details: The booking system is for services related to smart ID cards and passports. You will need a valid South African ID number to make a booking. The system requires you to enter your personal details such as full name, surname, cell phone number, and optionally, an email address.
  • ID Application Requirements: As an adult applicant, you can apply for your ID without your mother accompanying you, but you will need a certified copy of her ID. You will also need a certified copy of your birth certificate and proof of residential address (e.g., municipal bill). Fill out Form BI-9 in black ink, and if applying at a smart card office, you may not need physical photos as your image will be captured digitally.

OR

Application at the bank: To apply for your smart ID card at a bank, you must be a client of that particular bank. The following commercial banks offer this service at selected branches:

  • ABSA
  • FNB
  • Nedbank
  • Standard Bank

The Department of Home Affairs is currently in discussions with participating banks to increase their capacity through additional bank branches.

If you encounter any difficulties with the online application, you can reach out to the Home Affairs Call Centre (HACC) at 0800 60 11 90 or email them at hacc@dha.gov.za for assistance.
