Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by binge eating and purging. The binge eating is usually followed by self-induced vomiting, laxative or diuretic abuse, or excessive exercise in order to prevent weight gain. This can lead to a number of consequences, including:
- Electrolyte imbalances and dehydration from purging
- Tooth decay and gum disease from exposure to stomach acid
- Stomach and intestinal damage from purging
- Swelling and irritation of the esophagus from frequent vomiting
- Hormonal imbalances, including disruption of the menstrual cycle
- Osteoporosis from a lack of calcium and other nutrients
- Increased risk of heart problems and other organ damage
- Inflamed esophagus
- malnutrition
- hair loss or hair changes
- intolerance to cold
- fainting
- calluses on knuckles (from trying to cause vomiting)
- bad breath
- Swollen glands near the cheeks
- Irregular menstrual periods
- Kidney problems
- Diminished sex drive
- Addictions, substance abuse, and/or compulsive behavior
- Depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other mental health problems
- Low bone density.
- Osteopenia.
- Osteoporosis.
- Suicidal behavior
