SASSA SRD Grants for KZN FLOOD

The department of social development is encouraging residents of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) who were affected by the devastating floods to apply for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant for Disasters.

SASSA SRD GRANTS FOR KZN FLOOD

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) explained that SRD grants – such as the R350 COVID-19 one – are meant to provide temporary assistance to people affected by a crisis or disaster.

The relief is meant for people who are unable to meet their families’ most basic needs.

SASSA said it provides foods vouchers worth R1200 to each affected family during a crisis or disaster.

The value of the assistance increases to R3960 (R1980 x 2), which is available in food vouchers or cash, to a family whose members died because of the disaster.

“School uniform is provided to learners who lost [a] uniform during a disaster,” said the Agency. Girls are eligible for assistance worth R2700 while boys can receive R2500.

To apply for the food voucher, affected families are requested to get in touch with their ward councillor or a social worker.

The grants are valid for one month, according to SASSA, “because it is expected that people’s lives will normalise and the other form of SRD, including R350, will still be available for people who are experiencing hardship.”
