Yes, you can apply for your SA ID online through the application portal provided by the Department of Home Affairs.
It is the simpler, hassle-free route to apply for your ID Card. Start by visiting the e-Home Affairs website and registering. Once registered, you will be able to:
- Create your profile
- Complete your application
- Upload supporting documents
- Complete your payment
- Schedule appointments.
Have your phone with you to receive the one-time password (OTP) you’ll need to complete your profile registration. You will also receive an SMS later when your ID card is ready for collection.
Only offices that use the live capture system can issue smart ID cards. Contact your nearest home affairs office to make sure they have a “live capture” system for processing smart ID cards and new passports. You’ll not need to bring photos as the offices equipped to handle applications for the smart ID card will be able to cater for both processes.
Note: The old green ID books will remain valid as it is estimated that it would take 6 to 7 years to phase them out.
