Before You Start
- Check the APS requirements for your chosen course. Use our APS Calculator (select UKZN from the dropdown)
- Have your documents ready:
- Certified copy of your ID
- Grade 11 final results
- Grade 12 June results (if currently in Grade 12)
- National Senior Certificate (if already matriculated)

Step-by-Step Application
Step 1: Visit the CAO Website
UKZN uses the Central Applications Office (CAO) for applications. Go to caocheck.ukzn.ac.za.
Step 2: Create a CAO Account
- Click “Apply” or “New Application”
- Enter your ID number
- Create a password
- Fill in your personal details
Step 3: Choose Your Programmes
- You can select up to 6 programme choices
- Order them by preference (first choice = highest priority)
- Browse UKZN courses to find your programme
Step 4: Upload Documents
Upload clear, certified copies of all required documents. PDF format is preferred.
Step 5: Pay the Application Fee
Pay via EFT or at a bank. Keep your proof of payment — you’ll need the reference number.
Step 6: Submit and Track
- Submit your application
- Note your CAO reference number
