Can I Study Engineering with Mathematical Literacy?
Do South African universities accept Maths Literacy for engineering? Find out which engineering programmes accept Maths Lit and what your alternatives are.
This is one of the most common questions from South African matric students. The short answer: most university engineering programmes require pure Mathematics, not Mathematical Literacy. But there are alternatives.
The Hard Truth
Traditional university engineering degrees (BEng, BSc Eng) at institutions like Wits, UCT, UP, UKZN, Stellenbosch, and UJ require pure Mathematics at NSC Level 5 or 6 (60-79%). Maths Literacy is not accepted for BEng programmes.
This is because engineering degrees are mathematically intensive — you’ll study calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and statistical methods from first year.
Engineering Programmes That May Accept Maths Literacy
There are a few pathways where Maths Literacy may be accepted:
| Programme Type | Institution | Maths Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Diploma in Engineering | CPUT, DUT, TUT, VUT, CUT, MUT | Maths or Maths Lit Level 4 |
| National Diploma (N Dip) | Universities of Technology | Varies — check specific programmes |
| Higher Certificate | Various | Maths Lit Level 3-4 |
Note: Even at Universities of Technology, pure Mathematics is strongly preferred for engineering diplomas. Check each programme’s specific requirements.
What Can You Study Instead?
If you have Maths Literacy and want a technical career, consider these alternatives:
- Information Technology / Computer Science diplomas — some accept Maths Lit (check specific requirements)
- Business / Commerce programmes — BCom degrees often accept Maths Literacy for non-accounting streams
- TVET College engineering programmes — NCV Engineering programmes accept Maths Literacy
- Built Environment programmes — Construction Management, Quantity Surveying at some UoTs

Can You Upgrade Your Maths?
Yes. You can rewrite your matric Mathematics as a private candidate through the DBE or IEB. Some universities also offer bridging programmes or extended degree programmes that include foundational maths. Check with the specific university.
Bottom Line
If you want to study a BEng or BSc Engineering at a traditional university, you need pure Mathematics — usually at Level 5 or 6. Maths Literacy opens doors to diplomas, technical programmes, and alternative career paths, but not traditional engineering degrees.
