The signs and symptoms of congenital heart disease can vary depending on the type of condition a person has, age, the severity of the condition and the number of heart defects. Some common signs and symptoms include:
- Cyanosis (a bluish tint to the skin, lips, and nails)
- Rapid breathing or trouble breathing.
- Fatigue or weakness
- Excessive sleepiness.
- Poor feeding or poor weight gain
- Rapid heartbeat or heart murmur
- (a swishing sound made by the heart that may indicate abnormal blood flow).
- Poor blood circulation.
- Weak pulse or pounding heartbeat.
- Swelling of the legs, abdomen, or chest
However, some people with congenital heart disease may have no signs or symptoms at all. It is important to note that congenital heart disease is often discovered during prenatal ultrasound or shortly after birth.
