The signs and symptoms of sepsis, or blood poisoning, can vary depending on the severity of the condition and the underlying cause of the infection. Some common signs and symptoms of blood poisoning may include:
- Fever, chills, or feeling very cold
- Rapid breathing or difficulty breathing
- Rapid heart rate
- Fatigue or weakness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Chest pain or abdominal pain
- Sudden worsening of an existing infection
- Warm or clammy/sweaty skin
Some of these symptoms are associated with the flu or other illnesses. However, if you’ve had surgery recently or you’re recovering from a wound, it’s important that you call your doctor immediately after experiencing these possible signs of blood poisoning. Advanced symptoms of blood poisoning may be life-threatening and include:
- Confusion or disorientation
- Skin rash or discoloration (red spots on the skin that may grow larger and look like a big, purple bruise)
- Shock
- Little to no urine production
- Organ failure
Those who become ill more slowly may also develop some of the signs of meningitis. The symptoms of sepsis may look like other conditions or medical problems. If you suspect that you or someone else has sepsis, it is important to seek medical attention immediately, as sepsis can be a life-threatening condition.
