Signs and Symptoms of Chilblains

The signs and symptoms of chilblains, also known as pernio, are typically related to poor blood circulation in the affected areas of the skin. The symptoms usually appear a few hours after exposure to cold temperatures and can last for several days or weeks.

The most common signs and symptoms of chilblains include:

  • Red, swollen, and itchy patches on the skin
  • Blisters or ulcers on the affected areas.
  • A burning or tingling sensation in the affected areas.
  • Discoloration of the skin, such as blue or purple hues.
  • In severe cases, pain and discomfort in the affected areas.

Common places for chilblains to develop are:

  • Fingers
  • Toes
  • Ear lobes
  • Nose
  • Cheeks
  • Heels
  • Shins
  • Thighs
  • Hips

In some people, chilblains may recur each winter, and in rare cases, it can lead to long-term skin damage, such as thickened or discolored skin.

Additionally, chilblains may be accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, fatigue, or general malaise. In some cases, chilblains may be a sign of an underlying medical condition, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.

If you experience any of these symptoms or if your symptoms worsen, it is important to see a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.
