The main symptom of a bunion is a swollen, painful bump on the side of the big toe. Other symptoms may include:
- redness and warmth in the area
- difficulty moving the big toe
- pain or discomfort when wearing shoes
- thick skin on the underside of your big toe
- calluses on your second toe
The pain associated with a bunion might make it difficult to walk. See your doctor if you experience:
- persistent foot pain
- inability to find shoes that fit you comfortably
- decreased flexibility in your big toe
- a large lump on or near the joint on your big toe
In advanced cases, the big toe may start to turn towards the other toes, a condition called hallux valgus. If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor or a podiatrist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
