How much duty-free can you claim?

The duty-free allowance for adults (18 years and older) entering Australia is a general duty-free allowance of AUD 900 for personal goods and gifts. If you are under 18 years of age, you get a duty-free allowance of AUD450. If you are a crew member, the limit is AUD450.

People of ages above 18 may also access:

  • An additional alcohol allowance of up to 2.25 liters of alcoholic beverages (including wine, beer, or spirits).
  • An additional tobacco allowance of up to 25 cigarettes or 25 grams of tobacco products or 25 sticks of cigars or cigarillos.

There are no duty-free concessions on tobacco or alcohol for travellers aged under 18 years of age.

Travelling with family

Families coming back to Australia on the same flight or voyage may combine (pool) their individual duty-free concession limits. To do this, families must stay together when going through Customs clearance.

A family includes a person and his or her de facto partner (including same-sex couples) and any of their children under 18 years of age; or a husband and wife, and any of their children.

For example, a family of two adults and two children would have a combined duty-free allowance of AUD2700.
