Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cells of the breast. It can occur in both men and women, although it is much more common in women. Breast cancer begins when cells in the breast begin to grow and divide in an abnormal way, forming a tumor. If the cancer cells are not treated, they can spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream or lymphatic system.

There are several different types of breast cancer, including ductal carcinoma, which begins in the cells of the ducts (the tubes that carry milk from the lobules to the nipple), and lobular carcinoma, which begins in the lobules (the glands that produce milk). Other types of breast cancer include inflammatory breast cancer, which affects the skin and tissue of the breast, and Paget’s disease of the breast, which affects the nipple and areola. Risk factors for breast cancer include being female, increasing age, having a family history of breast cancer, certain genetic mutations, and certain lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption and lack of physical activity. Early detection and treatment can greatly improve the chances of a successful outcome.
