How Much is Paid Parental Leave

Parental Leave Pay for a child born or adopted from 1 July 2023 is based on the weekly rate of the national minimum wage. Your family can get up to 20 weeks, which is 100 payable days. The current payment for Parental Leave Pay is $162.49 a day before tax, or $812.45 per 5 day week. The rate of Parental Leave Pay usually changes every July.

Your family can get up to 100 days of Parental Leave Pay, or 20 weeks based on a 5 day work week. If you have a partner, part of Parental Leave Pay will be reserved for them to use. The most one parent in a couple can use is 90 days.

If you’re a single parent, you can get the full 100 days of Parental Leave Pay. If you choose, you can give approval to share Parental Leave Pay with another parent.

When your payment starts will also depend on when you make your claim. You’ll need to choose how to take your payment. You can get Parental Leave Pay before, during or after any paid or unpaid employer funded leave. This includes all of the following:

  • maternity or parental leave
  • annual leave
  • long service leave.

Parental Leave Pay is a taxable payment. Paid Parental Leave is paid for a maximum of 18 weeks. However, it’s important to note that PPL is income-tested, which means that the payment may be reduced or not applicable for higher-income individuals.

The PPL payment is usually made directly to the primary caregiver, either as a lump sum or in regular installments, depending on the individual’s preference.

It’s important to visit the official Services Australia website (https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/) or contact Centrelink directly for the most up-to-date and accurate information on PPL payment rates. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific circumstances and provide you with the current payment rates and eligibility criteria.
