Acute diarrhea usually lasts for 2 to 3 days, although it can last up to a week. If your diarrhea lasts longer than a week, or if you have additional symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, fever, or blood in your stool, you should see a doctor for evaluation and treatment.
Diarrhea that lingers on for long poses the risk of resulting in dehydration in both children and adults alike.
Indications of dehydration in adults may include:
- Excessive thirst
- Dry mouth or skin
- Little or no urination
- Weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness
- Fatigue
- Dark-colored urine
Indications of dehydration in infants and young children may include:
- Not having a wet diaper in three or more hours
- Dry mouth and tongue
- Fever above 102 F (39 C)
- Crying without tears
- Drowsiness, unresponsiveness or irritability
- Sunken appearance to the abdomen, eyes or cheeks
Chronic diarrhea, which lasts for several weeks or more, may require further medical evaluation and treatment to determine the underlying cause. In some cases, chronic diarrhea can be a symptom of a more serious underlying condition that needs to be addressed.
