The main causes of bronchiectasis include:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): This is a group of lung conditions that make it difficult to breathe and is a common cause of bronchiectasis.
Cystic Fibrosis (CF): This is a genetic disorder that affects the lungs and digestive system. It can cause the buildup of thick, sticky mucus in the lungs, which can lead to bronchiectasis.
Infections: Recurrent or persistent lung infections, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, or lung abscesses, can damage the airways and lead to bronchiectasis.
Immune Deficiencies: A weak immune system can make it more difficult for the body to fight off infections, which can lead to bronchiectasis.
Other factors: Exposure to inhaled toxins, radiation therapy, autoimmune diseases, or a history of lung surgery can also cause bronchiectasis.
It is important to note that in some cases the cause of bronchiectasis is not clear, and in that case it’s called Idiopathic bronchiectasis.
