Bowel Polyps

Bowel polyps are small growths that appear on the lining of the colon or rectum. They are typically benign (noncancerous), but some types of polyps can develop into cancer over time. The exact cause of bowel polyps is not fully understood, but they are more common in people over the age of 50 and in those with a family history of the condition.

There are several different types of bowel polyps, including adenomas, hyperplastic polyps, and inflammatory polyps. Adenomas are the most common type and have the potential to become cancerous. Hyperplastic polyps and inflammatory polyps are less likely to become cancerous. Most bowel polyps do not cause any symptoms, but they can sometimes cause bleeding or a change in bowel movements. If you have bowel polyps, your healthcare provider will likely recommend regular screenings to monitor their growth and determine if treatment is necessary. In some cases, polyps may be removed during a colonoscopy procedure.
