The College of Technology Education, Kumasi is one of the constituent Colleges of the University of Education, Winneba. It was established in 1966 and started as Kumasi Technical Training Centre by the Government of Ghana with technical advice from the British Government. It operated initially as a department of Kumasi Polytechnic. In 1963, the constructional works for a permanent site started and were completed in early 1966.
Training programmes were therefore transferred from the Kumasi Polytechnic to the present site in September 1966. This resulted in the expansion of activities as well as change of name to Technical Teachers College (TTC) and later Kumasi Advanced Technical Teachers College (KATTC).
The College offered a certificate course in Education Studies, as well as courses in specialized areas in industrial arts and commerce. It became one of the seven Diploma Awarding Colleges when it was affiliated to the Institute of Education of the University of Cape Coast in 1977. This was as a result of the restructuring of Ghana Teacher Education programmes.
Following the educational reforms in 1992, the College became part of the University College of Education of Winneba (UCEW) in 1996. Integrated in 1996 as one of the constituent colleges of the then University College of Education of Winneba (UCEW), the College is the only tertiary institution mandated to train technical and vocational teachers for the Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector. The College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) is a public secular coeducational research institution located in the second largest city in Ghana, Kumasi. COLTEK has four faculties and offers undergraduate and graduate programmes in eleven departments. The College runs academic programmes leading to the award of diploma, degrees, masters, and doctoral degrees. COLTEK offers major programmes in business, technology and educational studies. Teaching staff at COLTEK are grounded in the integration of rigorous classroom studies with learning experiences.
Acting with dispatch to honour a request by the Principal of the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) Prof. Reynolds Okai, the Member of Parliament for Kwadaso in the Ashanti Region, Dr Samuel Kwadwo Nuamah has donated ten street light sets with accessories to COLTEK. He made the request during a courtesy call on him by Dr. Nuamah, early in May 2017 and the Member of Parliament pledged to support.
The stalling of works on the over GHC3.5 million Conference Centre at the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) was a prominent feature in discussions when the Principal of COLTEK, Prof. (Ing.) Reynolds Okai paid a courtesy call on the Ashanti Regional Minister, Honourable Simon Osei-Mensah at his office in Kumasi, last Thursday, June 1, 2017. Construction works on the 3000-seating-capacity edifice- touted as the biggest in the entire West African sub region – started in September 2010 and was originally expected to be completed in February 2013.
The College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) has made a major stride towards helping to fight the cancerous graduate unemployment situation that has bedeviled the nation for years now. The College is now collaborating with industry to offer practical entrepreneurial training to all its final year students so they (students) would not be overly reliant on seeking formal employment upon completion but open up their own businesses and employ others.
